Amazing...Charts: How The Cancer Olympics reaches doctors

I have something marvelous to tell you.

The Cancer Olympics relates how I experienced truly terrible medical care, resulting in a two-year delay in the diagnosis of my potentially lethal cancer.

A few posts back, this blog recounted how my book was read by a Dr. James Legan, a specialist in Internal Medicine from Montana.   He and I enjoyably “tweetread” the book, with him tweeting me questions and comments as he read the book in real time.

I am delighted to report that Dr. Legan made my story the case study at the heart of a presentation he made to a major medical conference in Chicago!   He has a simple yet brilliant approach to patient engagement he uses in his practice: he projects his Electronic Medical Record onto a screen that allows patients to co-create chart entries with him.   He composed a blog entry about the how the missteps made by the four doctors involved in my diagnostic pathway could have been averted, had they used his system.   The conference moderators were so impressed that they made it the keynote guest blog for the whole Amazing Charts conference!  His Amazing Charts guest blog is here: http://bit.ly/ZAhBC4

In a touching gesture of great thoughtfulness, Dr. Legan invited those in attendance to sign his copy of The Cancer Olympics, saying that he would give it to me if ever he and I meet in person.

I am so honoured and moved by having my book shared this way!  For me, it is the highest purpose to which The Cancer Olympics could ever be used – to reach the minds and hearts of medical professionals, to inspire them to better care.   Most doctors want to respond to my story by sticking their fingers in their ears and humming – but Dr. Legan heals me by proving that there are dedicated physicians who respond to my story with creativity, integrity, vision, and compassion.

Marvelous indeed!

The Cancer Olympics can be ordered online via Amazon and Indigo, but the donation to cancer charity is maximized by ordering online from The Friesenpress Bookstore.
